1. Flooded Batteries:
Traditionally, this is the only type of battery that existed for starting and deep cycling. It has a liquid electrolyte that is allowed to have a free movement within the battery compartments. The battery cells have got lids that can be opened by the user. As the battery continues to go through continuous charging and discharging, the electrolyte level decreases and can be topped up with distilled water. The typical absorption voltage of this battery ranges between 14.4 – 14.9 volts while the float voltage range typically lies between 13.1 – 13.4 volts.
The working principle between the sealed and the flooded types is almost the same with only some small modifications on the sealed types. The main difference between the flooded batteries and the sealed batteries is the fact that the manufacturers of the sealed batteries have ensured that there will be no reduction in the electrolyte throughout the life of the battery. There is therefore no time when you will need to add distilled water in the cells. For this reason, the cells are sealed and the user cannot have an access to the cells, a reason why it is at times called a service free battery. The electrolyte of such batteries is always slightly more viscous than the electrolyte used in the flooded types. The absorption voltage typically ranges between 14.2 – 14.7 volts while the float ranges between 13.1 – 13.4 volts. VLRLA or rather the Valve Regulated Lead Acid Batteries fall among the sealed batteries. During charging and recharging, there is always some formation of hydrogen and oxygen gases. These need to be allowed to escape from the cells to the environments. The valve regulation system is designed to allow for the safe escape of the above mentioned gases during recharging. The absorption voltage of this battery is typically between 14.2 – 14.5 volts while the float voltage typically ranges between 13.2 – 13.5 volts.
AGM is an acronym of Absorbent Glass Matt and is a design that ensures the electrolyte is suspended closely to the active plate materials. In essence, this is an advanced design of the VRLA batteries. The main difference is that it has a more charging as well as superior discharge efficiency. During charging, the gases produces are subjected to pressure hence reversing them to water. No gas will therefore escape to the atmosphere. The most popular uses of this type of battery includes solar & storage, deep cycling, starting of engines and power sports. The typical range of voltage absorption is 14.4 – 15.0 volts while the float range of voltage is typically 13.2 – 13.8 volts.
In the Gel batteries, just like in the case of the AGM batteries, the electrolyte is suspended. The main difference between the two is the fact that AGM still lies within the wet cell category while the Gel Cell does not. The electrolyte in this type of battery has Silica added to it making it to be stiff or rather to set up. Compared to other lead – acid accumulators, the recharge voltage on the GEL cell is lower. This battery is the most sensitive among all the types of batteries as far as overcharging is concerned. The batteries give the best results when it comes to deep cycle applications having the capacity to last longer when used even in hot weather. If you use an inappropriate battery charger on the GEL cell, there are increased risks of premature failure as well as poor performance.
